Leaves Fall –  Backs Call!

While still on the trees, brown and red leaves look beautiful, but scattered and piled up on the lawn and walkways … no good. Unfortunately, raking up leaves can strain the shoulders and the back.

Although each pull on the rake is not very strenuous, the repetitive movements can cause problems. We at Kavett Chiropractors can help you if you hurt yourself, however most strains can be avoided by remembering the following:

  1. Only clean a little at a time. It doesn’t have to be all finished in one day.
  2. Every few minutes switch hands. Although this may feel awkward, it will balance any muscular exertions.
  3. Don’t try to fling the leaves with the rake. Pull a small amount a short distance at a time.

4. When filling the bags, get right down on the ground by kneeling or squatting. Don’t bend at the waist.

5. Fill the bags so they are not too heavy or bulky. It’s cheaper to buy more bags than to suffer with a strained back or shoulder

6. When carrying filled bags remember to lift with your leg muscles, and be careful not to strain your arms or wrists

Enjoy the fresh air and exercise. But if you should hurt yourself, call us. We can help you.
